Cartographer/Geospatial Data Technician
Imray is the leading publisher of nautical charts and books. Based in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, the company is at a time of exciting change, as we build on our internationally respected range of printed books and charts to continue to grow our digital presence and range of electronic products.
We have recently invested in new geospatial production tools (Caris Hydrographic Production Database (HPD)) and utilise a variety of other Geographic Information System (GIS) software to design and produce nautical charts.
The role
We are recruiting for a cartographer/geospatial data technician to work on the production of our nautical chart range.
The role involves using HPD and other geospatial tools to process, edit and label marine source data to produce paper and digital charts. Other tasks include updating and correcting existing charts.
The right applicant will have a good eye for detail, an analytical approach and an interest in data management. Cartography/GIS qualifications and experience are desirable, particularly if the experience is within the maritime sector in a similar role. In-house training in hydrographic applications would be provided.
We are a small independent company and work closely as a team so good communication skills are essential.
About You
Essential
Experience of working with geospatial data and databases using Caris HPD, Esri ArcGIS, MAPublisher, PostGreS or other GIS applications
Strong IT skills
Well organised with excellent self-motivation
Ability to work in a team environment to tight deadlines
Attention to detail
Ability to analyse, research and compile information
Good communication and interpersonal skills
Desirable
Experience of using hydrographic data standards e.g. ENCs and understanding or experience of S-57/S-101 data models
Experience of Caris Paper Chart Editor (PCE)
Experience of working with and maintaining PostgreSQL database systems
Experience of using Python
Experience of spatial data manipulation using tools such as FME, CARIS Process Designer, Esri ModelBuilder and Filemaker Pro
Qualifications in a design or cartography-related discipline
Interest in sailing, navigation and nautical charts

Terms
Based at our headquarters at Wych House, the post is full time, 35 hours per week, but hours of work are flexible. Hybrid working an option. Competitive salary and company pension scheme.
Our offices are in the centre of St Ives, Cambridgeshire, between Huntingdon and Cambridge. There is free parking and good access to the guided bus to Cambridge.
